The Prescription Drug Monitoring Program has announced training dates in August for prescribers and dispensers to gain more experience in using the NH PDMP system.  If you cannot attend in person or through DHMC’s VTEL system, you will be able to review the sessions by accessing the recording on licensing board web sites in the near future.  A list of upcoming training dates are available for download here.

Recent legislation passed in 2016 will now require the use of the PDMP when opioids are prescribed for your patients. Specific details of when a prescriber and dispenser must use the PDMP system will be included in upcoming administrative rules that will be adopted by all medical licensing boards.  In general, the querying of the PDMP will be required when writing an initial schedule II, III, or IV opioid prescription for the management or treatment of a patient’s pain and then periodically, at least twice a year.  Administrative  rules will include exceptions for:

-  Controlled substances administered to a patient in a health care setting;

-   The PDMP program is inaccessible or not functioning properly, due to an internal or external electronic issue; or

-   An emergency department is experiencing a higher than normal patient volume, and to query the program database would materially delay care.

We encourage all prescribers and dispensers to take advantage of the training sessions and recordings to gain a better understanding of the use of the PDMP system.  Please contact Kathy Bizarro-Thunberg at This email address is being protected from spambots.
