Acknowledgements: Beginning in 2010, the data submission format changed from a discharge flat file, to a claims detail file. Additionally, data collection, validation and aggregation were conducted by the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services. In light of these changes, 2010 will be considered a baseline and building block for future analysis.

A quality check of the data revealed the following caveats which should be considered before conclusions are drawn from this report.

  1. A discharge flat file was created using an algorithm which reviewed a number of different claim elements to identify unique discharges. In several instances, multiple claims were combined to create one discharge line, which resulted in the loss of some claims level detail.
  2. November data is missing for Weeks Medical Center; it has been estimated to account for approximately 80 discharges.
  3. Self Pay discharges were not identified for Monadnock Community Hospital and New London Hospital.
  4. When compared to 2009, a decrease in discharge volume greater than 15% was identified for the following hospitals: Valley Regional Hospital, Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, Huggins Hospital, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital. Alternatively, an increase in discharge volume greater than 15% was identified for Cottage Hospital and New London Hospital.
  5. Payer Name was submitted as a free text field. In light of this, New Hampshire Hospital Association worked together with the Department of Health and Human Services to designate an appropriate Payer Classification for each discharge.
  6. Data elements including but not limited to Payer, Primary Diagnosis, Disposition, Race, Ethnicity, Language and Admit Source contained blanks. On average the blanks accounted for less than 1% of total discharges.
