"Walk New Hampshire Week" June 1-7

CONCORD - Fats Domino liked to sing about "Walking to New Orleans" and the Police dreamed of "Walking on the Moon," but why not do your walking right here in New Hampshire?

That's the message behind "Walk New Hampshire Week," which runs from June 1-7.

Schools, businesses, hospitals and other organizations are already planning group walks in their communities on the day of their choosing during Walk NH Week, which is sponsored by the Foundation for Healthy Communities and the Governor's Council on Physical Activity & Health.

A highlight of this year's fitness initiative is the kick-off event on June 1 at 10 a.m. That's when an Inter-generational Wellness Walk sponsored by the New Hampshire Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, will set off from White Park in Concord bound for the Statehouse – 1.5 miles away – where participants will join First Lady Dr. Susan Lynch for the reading of an official proclamation celebrating the week-long event.

Since its founding in 2004, nearly 50,000 people have walked more than half a million miles during Walk NH Week. Meanwhile, ambitious teams such as the 13-member "Wonderful Women Walking" from Meredith set collective goals that range from 62 miles – the distance around Lake Winnipesaukee – to the 599 miles it would take to walk the entirety of the New Hampshire border.

To find suggested safe walking routes throughout the state, free log books to calculate your mileage, registration forms to create your own walking team or to sign on for group walks that are already scheduled, go to www.walknh.org
